Rack v1.0
Inspired by Stefan Didak, I’ve decided to publish much held hardware information about my Home Office and my Server Rack.
I’m sorry that I can’t seem to find any images of my original server rack from my first home (2002-2006). However at the beginning of the year I finally purchased my second home with my beautiful wife. In this home I found the perfect place for my rack… an alcove in the back of the garage. Unfortunately I underestimated the heat produced by the Northwest Arkansas sun and had to temporarily move the servers to a spare bedroom that was not being used.
Before the move I did capture a picture of the rack:
Ignore the clutter… I’m moving… ![]()
Unfortunately during the summer of 2011 I’ve had to move the servers into a spare bedroom of our new house. I plan to build two special doors which will enclose the rack and allow me to tap into the AC unit for next year… but for now I’ve had to empty the rack, leaving only a few key pieces behind:
The worst part is I just completed a complete rewiring. I bought brand new cat5e networking cable, and ran 3 cables to each server location and neatly ran them up to the routing equipment on top.
Even my house got the royal treatment with a fancy 12 port patch panel going to the Living Room (for XBox360 and AppleTV v1) and to my home office.
Routing equipment is neatly organized and plugged into a power strip which leads down to a UPS battery backup at the bottom of the rack.
Current Temporary Home of the Servers
A corner of the spare bedroom. This room was not being occupied and was acting as an overflow room for our miscellaneous stuff whenever we cleaned house. Now it acts as a special computer server room until the walls are built on my server rack enclosure in the garage.
Luckily it doesn’t take much to connect into a half dozen servers.
I only have the Living Room and Home Office wired for networking… (Ran out of winter time, attic is very hot during the summer!)
Thus a wire is strung from the Home Office to our spare bedroom for “server rack” connectivity.
